Alcohol Delivery

Alcohol Delivery App Development with Age Verification

Tepia builds alcohol delivery apps for licensed retailers that verify age at checkout and again at the door, where drivers scan the customer's ID and the result is recorded. Builds include geofenced delivery zones, delivery hours set per store, POS inventory sync and a refusal flow that returns product to the store.

The essentials at a glance

An alcohol delivery is lawful only if the right adult receives it at the right place and time, and the app has to prove each of those.

Two Age Checks

Tepia verifies age at checkout and requires a scanned, unexpired ID at the door before a driver can complete the handoff.

Refusal Flow

If the ID fails or the buyer seems intoxicated, Tepia guides the driver through refusal and return of product to the store.

Rules By Location

Delivery zones, hours and blackout days are set per store, so the app never accepts an order a license does not allow.

Inventory Synced

The catalog syncs with your POS, so customers see what is on the shelf now, including allocated bottles and cold beer.

The numbers matter.

Figures Tepia keeps in view when scoping alcohol delivery apps.

33%

Underage Drinking

NIAAA, citing the 2024 national drug use survey, reports about 33 percent of people ages 12 to 20 have had a drink, so ID checks matter.

91%

Adults With Smartphones

Pew Research Center reports about 91 percent of US adults own a smartphone, the device most delivery orders start on.

20%

Revenue After Mobile

Tepia clients report roughly a 20 percent revenue increase after adding mobile, the channel delivery customers use.

How alcohol delivery rules shape the app

Alcohol delivery in the US runs inside a patchwork of state and local rules. Most states use some form of the three tier system, and delivery is usually allowed only from a licensed retailer, sometimes with a separate delivery permit. States and counties differ on delivery hours, Sunday sales, whether spirits can be delivered or only beer and wine, whether drivers need training or must be employees, and whether certain areas are dry. Tepia does not give legal advice, but it builds the app so your counsel’s answers become settings rather than code.

That means every store has its own zone drawn on a map, its own delivery hours and holiday rules, its own list of products eligible for delivery and its own record retention period. When you open a location across a state line, you add a rule set instead of rebuilding the app. Tepia also plans for app store review, since Apple and Google both apply age ratings and specific policies to apps that sell alcohol.

Age verification at checkout and at the door

Age checks happen in more than one place, and each leaves a record. Tepia typically builds this sequence:

Checkpoint Method What gets recorded
Account signup Date of birth entry and age gate Stated birth date and consent time
First order or flagged order ID document scan with selfie match through a verification provider Verification result and reference, not the ID image unless required
Checkout Confirmation that the buyer will be present with ID Order flag requiring an ID scan at delivery
At the door Driver scans the barcode on the back of the ID and compares the photo ID type, expiration status, age result, driver and time
Refusal Driver selects a reason such as no ID, underage or apparent intoxication Reason, photo of returned items and return time

The door scan is the step that protects your license. Tepia builds the driver app so a delivery cannot be marked complete without a passing scan. It reads the PDF417 barcode on US driver licenses and state IDs, checks the expiration date and calculates age automatically, and manual entry is allowed only as a logged exception for damaged cards.

The driver’s doorstep flow and refusals

Drivers need a flow that is quick for a willing customer and firm for a problem one. On arrival, the app shows the buyer’s first name and the ID requirement, opens the camera to scan, and shows a large pass or fail result. If someone other than the buyer answers, the driver can verify that recipient instead where your rules allow it, and the app records both names.

Refusals happen, and Tepia treats them as a normal path rather than an error. The driver picks a reason, photographs the sealed bag, and the order moves to a return state. Store staff see refused orders on their way back, scan the items into inventory, and the customer receives a clear message about what happens next under your restocking policy. Tepia also adds a driver note step for refusals based on apparent intoxication, the situation responsible service training teaches drivers to watch for. Proof of delivery details draw on our proof of delivery app work.

POS, payments and identity integrations

Liquor stores and beverage retailers already run a point of sale system that knows what is on the shelf. Tepia syncs the delivery catalog with it so out of stock bottles disappear and allocated releases can be capped per customer. Typical connections include:

  • POS and inventory through the vendor’s API or scheduled exports, with images and tasting notes kept in a separate catalog.
  • Stripe or Square for payments, authorized at checkout and captured only after a passing ID scan, so refused orders release cleanly.
  • Identity verification providers for document and selfie checks at signup.
  • Twilio for order updates and masked phone numbers between drivers and customers.
  • Shopify when your web store already runs there and the app should share customers and orders.

How Tepia approaches alcohol delivery apps

  1. Discovery: a review of your licenses and the rules your counsel has confirmed for each location, ride alongs with current drivers, and a look at your POS data. Deliverables are an Investigation Summary, an Interview Summary and User Stories such as a driver refusing a delivery when a roommate without ID answers the door.
  2. Design: moodboards and a style guide for your brand, then wireframes for browsing, checkout, the ID scan and the refusal path.
  3. Development and Testing: an Alpha with staff orders, a Beta with real customers in one zone, and test plans for ID scanning across license formats, zone and hour rules, and payment capture.
  4. Training: hands on driver sessions on ID scanning, refusals and returns, plus store staff training on the order queue.
  5. Launch: App Store and Google Play submission with the correct age ratings, import of any existing delivery customer list, and support reps during the first weekend rush.
  6. Support: rule updates as laws change, new stores and features such as scheduled party orders.

Typically Discovery takes 1 to 3 months, development and QA 2 to 6 months, and launch about a month. See our process.

Marketplace partner or your own delivery app

Third party delivery marketplaces bring customers quickly and supply drivers, and for many stores that is enough. Tepia will tell you if that is your situation. Your own app makes sense when:

  • You want to keep customer relationships and order history instead of sharing them.
  • You run your own drivers and need ID checks and records you control.
  • You sell allocated bottles, clubs or subscriptions that a marketplace supports poorly.
  • You operate several stores and want one brand and loyalty program across them.

Many retailers run both, using marketplaces for reach and their own app for regulars. See retail loyalty apps, then talk to Tepia.

Frequently asked questions

Who can build an alcohol delivery app with age verification?
Tepia builds alcohol delivery apps for licensed retailers, with ID checks at signup and a required ID scan at the door. Builds typically use React Native for customer and driver apps and connect to your POS, Stripe or Square and an identity verification provider.
How does the driver verify age at the door?
Tepia’s driver app scans the PDF417 barcode on the back of a US ID, checks expiration, calculates age and prompts the driver to compare the photo. The delivery cannot be completed without a passing result or a logged exception.
Can the app follow different rules for each state or county?
Yes. Tepia configures delivery zones, hours, eligible products and blackout days per store, so your counsel’s guidance becomes settings, and new locations get their own rule set without new code.
What happens when an alcohol delivery is refused?
Tepia routes the order into a return flow where the driver records a reason and photo, store staff scan items back into inventory, and the payment authorization is released or adjusted under your policy.
How long does it take to build an alcohol delivery app?
Tepia typically spends 1 to 3 months in Discovery, 2 to 6 months in development and QA, and about a month on launch including app store review. Starting from an existing Shopify or POS catalog can shorten the build.
