Pharmacy Delivery

Pharmacy Delivery App Development

Tepia builds HIPAA aware pharmacy delivery apps that pull ready prescriptions from your pharmacy system, route drivers, capture signatures and recipient details at the door and keep a searchable delivery log. Builds typically use React Native for driver and patient apps, with encryption, audit logs and BAAs with every vendor that touches patient data.

The essentials at a glance

A prescription delivery has to reach the right patient, at the right temperature, with a record that holds up if anyone asks later.

Minimum Necessary

Tepia shows drivers a bag number, name and address, never the drug name, so a lost phone does not expose medication history.

Cold Items Tracked

Tepia flags refrigerated items such as insulin, prompts drivers to load them last and records cooler checks on the route.

Proof At The Door

Drivers capture signature, recipient name and relationship, building a delivery log your pharmacist can search in seconds.

Refill Reminders

Patients get refill and delivery texts written to avoid drug names, with opt in records kept for every message sent.

The numbers matter.

Health figures Tepia plans around when scoping pharmacy delivery apps.

50%

Recent Prescription Use

CDC survey data found about half of Americans, 49.9 percent, took at least one prescription drug in the prior 30 days.

1 in 4

Three Or More Drugs

CDC survey data found about one in four Americans took three or more prescription drugs in the prior 30 days, so refills recur.

90%

Customer Retention

Tepia clients report about 90 percent customer retention, which matters to pharmacies building refill loyalty.

How prescription delivery differs from other delivery

A pharmacy delivery is not a food order with a different icon. The package belongs to one patient, it may include a controlled substance, it may need refrigeration, and the pharmacy is accountable for knowing who received it. Independent pharmacies and small chains often run deliveries with a paper log and a driver’s personal phone, which works until a patient says a package never arrived or a board of pharmacy inspector asks to see records. Tepia builds pharmacy delivery apps that replace that log without slowing down the counter.

The daily rhythm matters too. Most pharmacies batch deliveries into one or two runs a day, with urgent deliveries to long term care facilities or hospice patients in between. Some deliveries collect a copay at the door, some go to a facility nurse rather than the patient, and some must return to stock if nobody is home. Tepia maps each of those outcomes so the driver always has a clear next step and the pharmacist always has a record.

HIPAA aware design for the driver’s phone

The driver app is where patient privacy is most at risk, because phones get lost and screens get seen. Tepia applies the minimum necessary principle: drivers see a bag or label number, the patient’s name and address, and any handling notes, but never the medication name or diagnosis. Data is encrypted on the device and in transit, sessions time out, and a lost device can be signed out remotely.

On the backend, Tepia builds audit logs that record who viewed or changed each delivery, hosts on HIPAA eligible services from AWS, Azure or GCP, and puts business associate agreements in place with each vendor that handles patient data. Patient texts leave out drug names by default.

Photos need the same care. A doorstep photo can show a house number, a car in the driveway or a family member, so Tepia makes photo capture optional by rule, stores images in the same encrypted record as the signature, and keeps them out of the phone’s camera roll. Retention periods follow your policy and your state’s record rules rather than a vendor default. For a deeper look, see HIPAA compliant software development.

Features of a pharmacy delivery app

Tepia scopes features from your delivery volume and the patients you serve. A typical build covers:

Feature Who uses it Why it matters
Ready queue pulled from the pharmacy system Pharmacy techs Only filled, verified prescriptions get assigned to a run
Bag scan at pickup and at the door Drivers Confirms the right package reaches the right address
Signature, recipient name and relationship Drivers Creates a delivery record the pharmacy can produce later
ID check for controlled substances Drivers Supports state rules for Schedule II deliveries where they apply
Refrigerated item handling Drivers and techs Keeps insulin and biologics in range during the run
Failed delivery and return to stock Drivers and pharmacists Gets undelivered medication back into inventory with a reason
Delivery windows and patient notifications Patients Reduces missed deliveries and calls to the counter
Copay collection at the door Drivers Takes cards through tokenized Stripe or Square readers

Tepia also builds a patient app or web page for scheduling deliveries and requesting refills, often the feature that keeps patients with an independent pharmacy rather than drifting to mail order.

Pharmacy systems, payments and messaging

Delivery data starts in the pharmacy management system. Tepia integrates with systems such as PioneerRx, PrimeRx and others through their APIs, interface files or delivery exports, depending on what each vendor supports, so techs never retype a ready prescription. Other connections include:

  • Stripe or Square for copays at the door, tokenized so card data never sits on your servers.
  • Twilio for delivery windows, on the way texts and refill reminders, configured to leave out sensitive details.
  • Routing through a maps provider so each run is sequenced by window and distance.
  • Facility portals for long term care homes that receive many deliveries a day and need a single signature sheet.

How Tepia approaches pharmacy delivery apps

  1. Discovery: time at the counter and on delivery runs, a review of your pharmacy system’s integration options, and a summary of board of pharmacy record rules for each location. Deliverables are an Investigation Summary, an Interview Summary and User Stories such as a driver returning a refrigerated order when nobody answers.
  2. Design: wireframes for the tech ready queue, driver route and door screens, and the patient scheduling page, designed to WCAG 2.1 AA so older patients can use it comfortably.
  3. Development and Testing: an Alpha with one store’s runs, a Beta across locations, and test plans for privacy controls, audit logging, offline capture and pharmacy system sync.
  4. Training: short hands on sessions for techs, pharmacists and drivers built around real delivery scenarios.
  5. Launch: migration of patient addresses and delivery preferences, App Store and Google Play release, and support reps on call for the first runs.
  6. Support: issue resolution, new store rollouts and features such as facility batch deliveries.

Typically Discovery takes 1 to 3 months, development and QA 2 to 6 months, and launch about a month. See our process.

Courier, pharmacy system add on or your own app

Some pharmacies use the delivery feature bundled with their pharmacy system, and if it covers your runs and records, Tepia will recommend keeping it. Others hand deliveries to a courier service. Your own app is worth building when:

  • You employ drivers in house and need records stronger than a paper log.
  • You serve long term care or hospice facilities with frequent, urgent deliveries.
  • You want a branded patient app for refills, delivery scheduling and reminders.
  • You operate several stores and want one delivery view across them.

Frequently asked questions

Who builds custom pharmacy delivery apps?
Tepia builds pharmacy delivery apps for independent pharmacies and small chains, with a driver app, a pharmacy dashboard and an optional patient app. Builds follow HIPAA aware architecture with encryption, audit logs and BAAs with vendors that handle patient data.
Can a delivery app connect to our pharmacy management system?
Tepia integrates through the vendor’s API, interface files or delivery exports, depending on what your system supports, and confirms the method during Discovery. The goal is that techs never retype a ready prescription.
How does the app handle controlled substance deliveries?
Tepia can require an ID check, signature and recipient name for flagged prescriptions, following the rules your state board sets. Each step is timestamped so the pharmacy can produce the record later.
Can drivers collect copays at the door?
Yes. Tepia connects Stripe or Square card readers to the driver app, tokenized so card data never touches your servers, and ties each payment to its delivery record.
How long does it take to build a pharmacy delivery app?
Tepia typically spends 1 to 3 months in Discovery, 2 to 6 months in development and QA, and about a month on launch. A driver app and dashboard without a patient app usually lands at the shorter end.
