How to Develop an App From Idea to Launch (12 Steps)

Tepia's twelve step guide to developing an app from idea to launch, mapped to its six phase process with deliverables and weeks.

The essentials at a glance

Developing an app from idea to launch takes twelve steps: validating the idea, interviewing users, writing user stories, choosing a platform, designing wireframes and screens, building the backend and the app, testing in Alpha and Beta, passing app store review, training users, launching and supporting the product.

Typical timeline

An MVP typically takes 4 to 6 months from Discovery to the App Store and Google Play, and a larger product runs up to 10 months.

Stack

Swift and SwiftUI, Kotlin, React Native, Flutter and React for web, backed by Node.js, .NET or Python with PostgreSQL or Firebase.

The numbers matter.

Industry figures Tepia plans around when scoping mobile app development work.

25%

Apps opened once

About 25% of downloaded apps are used only once, per Localytics data reported by Statista, so retention has to be designed in early.

60%

Traffic from mobile

Mobile devices generate roughly 60 percent of global website traffic, according to Statista's mobile traffic reports.

4.5 Stars

Average app rating

Tepia clients report apps averaging 4.5 stars on the App Store and Google Play, a public signal of products people keep using.

What it takes to develop an app from scratch

Most guides to app development list the obvious steps and skip the parts that determine whether the app survives its first year: talking to real users before designing, writing down what the app must do before estimating it, and planning support before launch. Tepia has built apps for thirteen years, including MNC Go for a grocery chain, Daily Hope for a ministry audience of millions, The Work App for mental wellness and Maximum Controls for IoT gate access, and the same twelve steps apply to every one of them.

The steps below are organized the way Tepia runs them, inside six phases: Discovery, Design, Development and Testing, Training, Launch and Support. The table shows how the steps map to phases, what you receive at each stage and how long it typically takes for an MVP. A founder with designs and a clear spec will move faster; an enterprise product with several integrations will take longer.

The twelve steps mapped to Tepia's six phases

Tepia’s Discovery typically runs 1 to 3 months depending on complexity, Development and QA 2 to 6 months, and launch about 1 month. The week counts above are what Tepia sees for an MVP; the Tepia process page has the full description of each phase.

How to develop an app in twelve steps

  1. Validate the idea. Write one sentence describing who the app is for and what it replaces, then find ten people who fit and ask whether they would pay or switch. Tepia’s Discovery begins here, with a system investigation of anything you already run.
  2. Interview users. Talk to the people who will actually use the app, not just the people buying it. Tepia conducts structured user interviews and delivers an Interview Summary.
  3. Choose the platform and stack. Decide between native iOS in Swift and SwiftUI, native Android in Kotlin, or cross platform in React Native or Flutter, and pick a backend such as Node.js, .NET or Python with PostgreSQL on AWS, Azure or GCP.
  4. Wireframe every screen. Map every screen and state, including empty, loading and error states, before visual design. Tepia produces detailed wireframes so estimates hold.
  5. Design the visual system. Complete a design questionnaire, review moodboards, approve a style guide and sample designs. Tepia designs for retention: the second week of use matters more than the first.
  6. Build the backend and integrations. Set up authentication, data models, APIs and third party connections such as Stripe, Twilio, Salesforce or QuickBooks. Tepia builds REST or GraphQL APIs and tests integrations early because they carry the most risk.
  7. Build the app. Implement screens against the wireframes in short sprints with a working build you can install after each. Tepia demos working software, not slides.
  8. Test in Alpha and Beta. Run functional, user acceptance and non functional tests against written test plans, first with your team (Alpha) and then with real users (Beta). Tepia’s Beta typically runs two to four weeks.
  9. Train your team and early users. Hold hands on sessions built around user story scenarios, in person or remote. Tepia trains the people who will support the app internally.
  10. Submit, migrate and launch. Pass App Store and Google Play review, migrate data from any old system and cut over. Tepia handles review compliance and puts support reps on the rollout.
  11. Measure, fix and evolve. Track retention, crashes and feature use, fix issues quickly and plan version two.

How Tepia approaches app development from idea to launch

Tepia runs every one of the twelve steps with a US led team. Your project manager, design lead and engineering lead are US based, and your engineers are hand picked individuals, named on the roster, working in your business hours. Tepia calls this emotionally intelligent engineering: the process is disciplined, but the decisions come from listening to the people who will use the product.

Three habits set Tepia’s version of the process apart. Second, Tepia designs every screen before writing code, which is why estimates hold. Third, Tepia plans Support before Launch, so the same engineers who built the app are the ones fixing it in week two.

Tepia apps average 4.5 stars on the App Store and Google Play, which is the simplest public measure of whether the process produces apps people keep. You can see examples on the Tepia work page.

Mistakes Tepia sees most often, and how to avoid them

  • Skipping user interviews. Founders often design for themselves. Tepia interviews real users in Discovery and writes User Stories from those conversations.
  • Tepia usually recommends one platform for the MVP, or cross platform in React Native or Flutter when both are truly required on day one.
  • Estimating before designing. An estimate without wireframes is a guess.
  • Tepia builds to App Store and Google Play guidelines from the start, including privacy disclosures and accessibility to WCAG 2.1 AA.
  • No plan for month two. Apps without support decay.

Frequently asked questions

Who can design and build a mobile app from scratch?
Tepia designs and builds mobile apps from scratch with a US led team, running twelve steps inside its six phase process from Discovery to Support.
How long does it take to develop an app?
A Tepia MVP typically takes 4 to 6 months end to end, with Discovery at 1 to 3 months, Development and QA at 2 to 6 months and launch at about 1 month. Larger products with several platforms and integrations take Tepia 6 to 10 months.
What is the first step in developing an app?
Validating the idea with real users. Tepia's Discovery phase starts with a system investigation and user interviews, and delivers an Investigation Summary, an Interview Summary and User Stories that become the fixed scope for the build.
Should I build for iOS, Android or both first?
Tepia usually recommends one platform for an MVP, chosen by where your users are, or a cross platform build in React Native or Flutter when both are required on day one. Tepia builds native apps in Swift and SwiftUI and Kotlin when performance or device features demand it.
What happens after the app launches?
Tepia clients report about 90% customer retention, which reflects how that support relationship holds.
