Apple and Google take up to 30% of digital subscriptions sold inside an app, per the published App Store and Google Play fee schedules.
Only about 25% of users return to a new app the day after install, according to AppsFlyer's widely cited retention benchmarks.
Tepia clients report about 90% customer retention, which is the number that decides whether a subscription app survives.
A creator with a large following on YouTube, TikTok or Instagram does not own that relationship. The platform controls the algorithm, the ad split, the data and the rules, and a single policy change can cut reach in half overnight. Tepia builds creator and community apps so that the audience relationship, the payment relationship and the first party data belong to you.
The practical payoff shows up in three places. Push notifications reach your members directly rather than competing in a feed. Subscription revenue clears at your payment processor rather than after a platform fee that can run 5% to 30%. And you can see who your most engaged members are and what they consume, which no social platform will ever hand you in full.
Tepia worked with Psych2Go, a YouTube creator with a large mental health audience, to bring that community into a dedicated app, and with Vokl TV on a video focused audience product. Both projects started from the same question: how do you give an existing audience a reason to open an app every day rather than once?
Most creator apps combine four building blocks: content delivery, membership and payments, community interaction, and the admin tools you use to run it. Tepia scopes each block in Discovery so that the first release ships the features that actually drive retention and defers the rest to a roadmap.
| Module | Typical features | Tepia notes |
|---|---|---|
| Content delivery | Video and audio library, offline downloads, series and playlists, scheduled drops, reading view | Offline first sync and background download so content is available without signal |
| Membership and payments | Free and paid tiers, Apple and Google in app subscriptions, Stripe on web, gifting, promo codes | Tepia maps tiers to App Store and Google Play rules to avoid review rejections |
| Community | Discussion threads, comments, direct messages, live Q and A, polls, member profiles | Moderation tools, reporting and blocking are required for store approval and are built in from day one |
| Engagement loops | Push notifications, streaks, reminders, daily prompts, badges | Tepia tunes cadence against analytics so notifications earn opens rather than uninstalls |
| Creator admin | Web portal for publishing, scheduling, member management, analytics, refunds | Built in React with a Node.js or .NET backend on AWS, Azure or GCP |
| Integrations | YouTube and podcast feeds, Shopify merch, Mailchimp or HubSpot, Zapier | REST and GraphQL APIs with webhooks so your existing tools keep working |
You do not need every row in version one. A content library, a paid tier and push notifications is a complete and fundable first release, and Tepia can add community and live features once you have retention data to guide the order.
Where your members pay matters more than most creators expect. Apple and Google take 15% to 30% of digital subscriptions sold inside the app (15% for most small businesses under their reduced rate programs). Stripe on the web charges a processing fee closer to 3%. Tepia typically designs a dual path: in app purchase for convenience and discovery, plus web checkout for members who arrive from your existing channels.
The rules around linking out to web payment have changed several times and differ by region, so Tepia reviews the current App Store and Google Play guidelines during Discovery and documents the approach in the Investigation Summary. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a creator app is rejected or pulled.
Physical goods, courses delivered outside the app and tipping each have their own treatment. Tepia has integrated Stripe, Square and Shopify for clients and will recommend the structure that keeps the most revenue with you while staying inside store policy.
Tepia runs every engagement through the same six phases, with a named project manager on your account and US based design and engineering leadership.
Tepia describes its design philosophy as emotionally intelligent engineering: the app should understand why a member opened it and make that moment count. For creator products that usually means less feed and more ritual.
Tepia will tell you when the timing is wrong.
A custom app becomes the better choice when you have a paying base and fees are eating a meaningful share of revenue, when you need features the platforms do not offer (offline audio, structured programs, private cohorts), when you want your own data and notification channel, or when you are building a business that will outlive a single creator. Tepia’s work with Daily Hope, an app for Pastor Rick Warren’s broadcast ministry, is an example of an established audience that needed its own home.
