Do’s and Don’ts of Social Media

Over the past few months it has been my personal mission to generate as much social media buzz about Tepia Co. as possible. There have been ups and downs, likes and unlikes, and hours of clicking “follow” involved.

I’ve learned what types of posts are guaranteed to gain audience attention and how to correctly utilize these. Here are my top five and the “dos and don’ts” of each:

Google Communities

Do:

  • Read the rules of each community before you post. Some are more restrictive than others; I was promptly threatened with removal for posting a quote.
  • Post often, as well as reply to comments made by others.

Don’t

  • Don’t be shy! A good place to start is by posting an introduction to yourself or your company.
  • Don’t blatantly advertise in communities, unless that is the purpose of the community. Instead, use the space as a way to show off your expertise and work you’ve done. This should be more effective than “buy this now!” anyway.

Photos

Do:

  • Hire a photographer. A professional will know how to make you and your team look your most photogenic.
  • Have fun! Smile and laugh during your photo session. Looking genuinely happy makes you more approachable to potential clients.

Don’t

  • Don’t use selfies on your company website or social media accounts. Save those narcissistic gems for your personal accounts only.
  • Don’t forget your personality at home. If your company has a more casual vibe to it, let that shine through your photos. Wear what you normally would to work and take most of your pictures at the office.

Hashtags

Do:

  • Use hashtags on every. Single. Post. I’ve forgotten a few times and the lack of traffic generated was amazing.
  • Use your location as a hashtag. Local people will be more interested in your product or service.

Don’t

  • Don’t use extremely long or unique hashtags #thisisntgoingtogetanyonesattention #ipromisethisispointless
  • Don’t use extremely board hashtags #cool #funny #omg

Quotes

[one-half-first][/one-half-first][one-half][/one-half]

Do:

  • Create your own quote image using Photoshop or Canva.com and always make sure to watermark it with your company logo.
  • Use quotes relevant to your company. For instance, at Tepia we value creativity, innovation, and new ideas dealing with mobile technology and the web. Communicate your values through the quotes you choose.

Don’t

  • Don’t neglect the details. Spend time perfecting your image: pick out a high quality photo, appropriate font, and a truly meaningful quote.
  • Don’t only post to one account. Post everywhere (Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Google Communities, Instagram, etc. The more the merrier!)

Contests and Giveaways

Do:

  • Require a like and re-post or share for contest entry.
  • Give away your product or service.

Don’t

  • Don’t go above your means. Give away something you can afford to.
  • Don’t give away something that has nothing to do with your business.
